About Chattogram Chapter

The president of the 7th Executive Council of the “Institute of Architects,” architect Mahbubul Haque, paid a visit to Chattogram and conducted a cordial interview with the city’s working architects. The event took place on October 3, 1985, at 7 o’clock at the home of architect Zarina Hossain. The establishment of an “Institute of Architects” branch in Chattogram was considered at the meeting. As a result, architect Samsud Touhid was asked by architect Zarina Hossain to set up a committee for the Institute of Architects, Chattogram. In accordance with this, the Chattogram branch of the “Institute of Architects” was established with architect Samsud Touhid serving as general secretary and architect Ahmed Jinnur Chowdhury serving as president.

It should be recalled that the first Bangladesh Institute of Architects was founded on February 25, 1972, following Bangladesh’s independence in 1971. Architect Yafes Osman served as general secretary, and architect Mazharul Islam served as president. However, as a result of a lack of architects, its operations eventually stopped.

In order to advance the profession generally, architects practicing in Chattogram felt the need to form a branch of the Bangladesh Institute of Architects there in 1996. Architect Shamsul Wares, who was serving as the 15th executive committee president of the Institute of Architects at the time, was contacted about this in May 1996. The proposal was discussed in the executive committee meeting and was approved. Through a letter, president architect Shamsul Wares asked architect Ahmed Jinnur Chowdhury to establish a full-fledged branch committee.

In response to the letter and the decision of the Institute of Architects, the first planning meeting with architects working in Chattogram was conducted on July 1, 1996. A planning committee was established at the conference, led by architect Ahmed Jinnur Chowdhury and included architects Faruk Ahmed and Ashiq Imran.

On July 7, 1996, at 5:30 PM, another meeting was conducted at Hiraman Associates Limited’s headquarters (Mannan Bhavan, Noor Ahmed Road, Chattogram) to discuss the formation of an Institute of Architects branch in Chattogram. Veteran architect Bidhan Barua presided over the gathering and oversaw the election. At that time, 23 architects were practicing in Chattogram.

After the Institute of Architects Chattogram Chapter was established, the CDA chairman and its representatives met on multiple occasions to discuss professional development. Additionally, the Institute of Architects is crucial in bringing about the necessary constitutional modifications. Till 1999, the Institute of Architects Chattogram Chapter was still in functioning. But as a result of unavoidable circumstances and a lack of support, its operations halted.

The Institute of Architects Chattogram Chapter was once again necessary beginning in 2003. At that point, Chattogram had twice as many active architects. Professional architects encountered a variety of issues in the absence of a standardized platform. In light of this, a number of meetings were held in the conference room of the offices of architects Taslim Uddin and Zarina Hossain of the publication “Dainik Purbokone” and “Adhibas,” respectively.

Mobashwer Hossain, president of the 15th executive committee of the Institute of Architects, and Sanaul Haque, general secretary, offered a great deal of assistance and assurance in this respect. Architects in Chattogram had long sensed the need to increase the operations of the Institute of Architects there. The executive council of the Institute of Architects’ cooperation in this sector has mirrored the goals of Chattogram’s architects.

The office of the Institute of Architects in Chattogram was established on September 27, 2003, thanks to the honest efforts and enthusiasm of Chattogram-based architects. To celebrate the inauguration, a large event was planned in the Institution of Engineers (IEB) auditorium. The celebration was overseen by architect Mobaswer Hossain, and honourable mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury of Chattogram City Corporation was the chief guest.

The majority of the current executive council members as well as a few former council members were present at the event. The opening ceremony featured two previous Institute of Architects presidents. The local Daily Purbokone newspaper ran a full-page circular in honour of this inauguration.

In keeping with this, the Institute of Architects Chattogram Chapter continues to conduct meetings, seminars, workshops, and other events for the general advancement of the profession. Subsequently the 8th, 9th and 10th Chapter Committee celebrates Founding anniversary.
